Read and Dream

A little about Read & Dream…

In 1993, Strandwood started the Read & Dream Team to encourage reading among our students. In 1999-2000 & 2001-2002 Strandwood was awarded $5,000 by the Governor's Reading Award Program for reading over a million pages each year. Reading minute goals are established by grade level. Each day, children record the minutes they read (or are read to). Logs are turned in monthly and students who meet their grade level minutes goal can choose a free book award.

The Principal and PTA are heavily supportive of the R&D program. In 2011, Read and Dream was awarded a $1,000 grant from the Foundation for Pleasant Hill Education. The program continues today with the support of our Community & Parent Volunteers.

Program Details

Purpose

To encourage kids to read outside of school.

What Counts

All outside of school reading - books, magazines, comics, homework, everything!

What Type Of Reading

All reading – silent reading, reading aloud to someone, or someone reading aloud to the student.

To Participate

Record all out of school reading minutes using the Read and Dream log.
* Important note: Logs don't have to be the pink ones that are given out to be valid; printing on regular paper is just fine.

Program Duration

The first day of school through May of each school year.

Due Dates

Completed reading logs are generally due on the last Friday of the month. We have three combined reading periods: August / September logs collected end of September); November / December (logs collected before winter break); April / May (logs collected mid May, to allow time for award distribution by end of May). Except for the April / May combined period, book awards are handed out the second Tuesday of the month after collection.

Awards

  • Students earn a free book for each multiple of the minutes requirement for their grade level, up to three free books per distribution. Unused minutes roll over to the next month. Example: A first grader reads 1,000 minutes in a month. The grade level goal for first grade is 480 minutes, so the student has earned 2 free books and 40 minutes will roll over to the next month. Each school year resets for minutes (unused minutes from the prior year do not roll over).

  • Classes with 100% participation for the month will earn 25 books to be added to their classroom library.

Help us reach our goal of 100% student participation!

Read & Dream Needs YOU!

Read and Dream, Strandwood’s reading incentive program, is always looking for new parent volunteers!

Running the Read and Dream involves distributing and collecting reading logs, tallying monthly minutes read by students, purchasing books (with PTA funds), organizing purchased and donated books, scheduling awards days, and handing out book awards to students (typically once a month). Volunteer hours can range from 2 - 10 hours a month and it would be great to have a team of 3 - 4 parents to help out.

If you are looking for a way to become more involved at Strandwood, love reading and promoting literacy, or just enjoy making kids really happy by handing out awards each month, then Read and Dream is the perfect volunteer opportunity for you.
